To make your trip to Madagascar a success, here are our tips and tricks
Best time to stay in Madagascar
Madagascar is a tourist destination to visit all year round, offering a diversity of landscapes and fascinating experiences. However, certain times of the year are particularly attractive for travelers looking for adventure and unique discoveries.
The period from July to September is ideal for whale watching on the island of Sainte Marie, in the northeast of Madagascar. These majestic creatures come to mate and give birth in the warm waters of Madagascar, offering visitors an impressive spectacle.
Additionally, fruit season, which runs from November to January, is a delicious time for tropical fruit lovers. Local markets are full of juicy mangoes, sweet pineapples, fragrant lychees and many other exotic delights.
However, the least favorable period would be between February and March. This is the cyclonic period on the island.
What about flights to Madagascar?
Many flights take you to Madagascar, the island of a thousand wonders. Check with your national airline to see if they have flight options to Madagascar. Otherwise, do some research on the internet.
Ivato International Airport, near Antananarivo, is the main gateway. Several airlines serve this airport with direct or stopover flights. However, opt for a direct flight on your first visit for a stress-free trip. You will arrive fresh and ready to fully enjoy your adventure.
Different travel classes will allow you to personalize your experience according to your needs and budget. Travel in economy class for value for money, business class for comfort, or first class for luxury.
The Ariary: The Currency of Madagascar
In Madagascar, the local currency is the ariary (MGA). In March 2024, the exchange rate is approximately 4800 ariary for 1 euro. To obtain a favorable exchange rate, travelers are recommended to exchange their money at banks or official exchange offices.
Credit cards are widely accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops in tourist areas of Madagascar. However, it is prudent to also carry cash for small expenses and transactions in local markets, where cards are not always accepted.
Travel to Madagascar without Health Constraints
Forget PCR tests and quarantines, Madagascar opens its doors to you without health restrictions. No vaccination is required to obtain a visa or residence card. However, we advise you to follow the recommendations of local health authorities.
Because Madagascar is a tropical country, mosquitoes are very numerous. Some carry diseases like malaria. Prepare accordingly. Likewise for everything related to food, a large part of the island unfortunately does not yet have access to drinking water. So be careful to only drink safe water.
Which Mode of Transport Should You Choose for Optimal Exploration?
To explore Madagascar optimally, the choice between 4×4 travel and national flight will mainly depend on the time you have available and your personal preferences. If you are on a tight schedule and want to maximize your time to visit different areas of the island, domestic flights are a great choice for covering long distances quickly.
However, if you prefer a slower approach and want to explore more isolated and less accessible areas in depth, then 4×4 travel is more suitable. Ultimately, a combination of the two means of transportation may be the best way to explore Madagascar, offering both the convenience of domestic flights and the freedom of exploration offered by off-road vehicles.
